Connect facts with a map, timeline, institution or scientific explanation.
Build a timeline that connects rulers, places and events instead of learning disconnected dates. Distinguish an archaeological source such as a coin or inscription from a later literary account. A source supports a particular historical claim; it does not automatically explain every feature of a period.
Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire; Ashoka ruled later in the same dynasty. Placing them on a timeline prevents confusing the founder with the ruler associated with Dhamma inscriptions.
Do not confuse a dynasty’s founder with its most familiar ruler, or use a later event to explain an earlier one.
Use maps to connect locations, river systems and physical features. Distinguish latitude from longitude and weather from climate. For soils and crops, connect properties such as moisture retention with cultivation rather than treating the association as an unexplained fact.
Black soil retains moisture and is associated with cotton cultivation. The Yamuna joins the Ganga at Prayagraj. Marking the rivers on a map links these facts to their physical setting.
The location of a river’s source, a city on its bank and its confluence are different facts. Do not interchange them.
Separate constitutional principles, institutions and specific provisions. Fundamental Rights concern constitutional protections; Directive Principles guide state policy. For institutions, note the function, source of authority and relationship with other bodies rather than memorising the name alone.
Article 17 abolishes untouchability. Fundamental Rights are in Part III of the Constitution. A question about the part and a question about a particular article require different levels of recall.
Do not treat every desirable policy objective as an enforceable Fundamental Right. Read whether the question asks about a right, principle or duty.
Distinguish production, income, saving and investment. Inflation describes a general rise in prices over time, rather than a price increase in a single item. Identify the role of an institution before matching it with an abbreviation or policy function.
The Reserve Bank of India is India’s central bank; a commercial bank provides banking services to customers. A rise in one vegetable’s price alone does not establish a general inflation rate.
Do not confuse the central bank with a commercial bank or nominal growth with inflation-adjusted growth.
Link a scientific term to the quantity or process it describes. Units help distinguish force, energy, power and pressure. In biology and chemistry, relate a named process to its inputs and outputs rather than learning only a definition.
Force: newton; energy: joule; power: watt
A force acts on an object, work transfers energy through displacement, and power measures the rate of energy transfer. A motor rated in watts is being described by power, not force.
A familiar unit may be attached to the wrong quantity in a distractor. Check dimensions and meaning before selecting it.
Group state knowledge by geography, institutions, heritage and historical events. Use a map for cities and rivers and a timeline for events. Keep a state’s capital separate from other major administrative or historical centres.
Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Prayagraj is associated with the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna. Sarnath near Varanasi is associated with the Buddha’s first sermon.
A place can be culturally important without being the state capital. Avoid assigning every well-known event to the same city.
Static revision covers relatively stable facts; current-affairs revision should preserve the event date and context. Record what happened, when it happened and which source confirmed it. A question about a historical host or winner should not be answered with a later edition’s result.
For the 2024 Summer Olympics, the host city was Paris. This is a dated fact about that edition, not a statement about the next Olympics. Write the year alongside the event in a revision note.
Do not turn a historical event into an undated “current” fact. Questions here are revision material rather than a live news feed.
Move from a stated relationship to a calculation. Keep the base, units and requested quantity visible.
A percentage is a comparison with a base of 100. Identify the reference quantity before calculating. For successive increases or decreases, apply the second percentage to the changed quantity. A percentage-point difference compares two percentages directly; a percentage change compares their relative sizes.
Percentage = part / whole × 100; new value = original × (1 ± r/100)
A price of 500 rises by 20% and then falls by 10%. The final price is 500 × 1.20 × 0.90 = 540, an overall increase of 8%.
Do not add successive percentage changes unless both are explicitly measured against the same original base.
A ratio describes relative shares rather than absolute amounts. Add the ratio parts to find the value of one part, then multiply by the required share. An average distributes a total equally across observations. When combining groups of different sizes, use their totals or a weighted average.
Share = total × required ratio part / sum of parts; mean = sum / count
Two deposits total 4,500 in the ratio 2:3. One part is 4,500/5 = 900, so the deposits are 1,800 and 2,700. For their average, divide the combined amount by two.
The mean of two group averages is only the combined average when the groups contain the same number of observations.
Simple interest is calculated on the original principal each period. Compound interest adds interest to the balance, so later interest is earned on a larger base. Match the interest rate to the compounding period, and distinguish interest earned from the final amount.
SI = PRT/100; amount with annual compounding = P(1 + r/100)^t
At 10% per year for two years, 1,000 earns 200 simple interest. Annual compounding gives an amount of 1,210, so compound interest is 210.
Do not report the final amount when the question asks only for interest. For half-yearly compounding, adjust both the rate and number of periods.
Speed relates distance to time. For a train passing a pole, the distance travelled is the train length. For a train passing a platform, include both lengths. When objects move in opposite directions, add their speeds; when one catches another moving the same way, subtract their speeds.
Speed = distance / time; km/h to m/s: multiply by 5/18
A 180 m train travelling at 54 km/h moves at 15 m/s. It passes a pole in 180/15 = 12 seconds. Passing a 120 m platform takes (180 + 120)/15 = 20 seconds.
A train is not fully past a platform when only its front reaches the far end. Include the train length.
Represent a task as one whole or a convenient number of units. A person completing it in a days works at 1/a tasks per day. Add rates for people working together; subtract a rate only if a worker or leak undoes completed work. State whether rates stay constant.
Combined rate = 1/a + 1/b; time = work / rate
A completes a task in 12 days and B in 18 days. Together their rate is 5/36 per day. In four days they complete 5/9 of the task, leaving 4/9.
The question may ask for remaining work rather than completed work. Read the final sentence again before choosing an option.
Read the labels, units and time period before extracting values. Distinguish a total from an average, and an absolute difference from a percentage difference. A graph can show numbers in thousands or percentages; convert them before combining quantities. Check whether a visual axis starts at zero.
Percentage change = (new − old) / old × 100
A table gives branch sales of 80 in April and 100 in May, in thousands. The increase is 20 thousand, and the percentage increase is (100 − 80)/80 × 100 = 25%.
The denominator for percentage growth is the original value. An increase of 20 units does not automatically mean a 20% increase.
Write the conditions and test your rule against every supplied fact.
Look first at differences, ratios, alternating positions and simple combinations of operations. A useful rule should explain every transition, not just the first pair. In a coding question, apply the stated transformation exactly and keep the order of operations visible.
For an arithmetic progression: a_n = a_1 + (n − 1)d
For 7, 11, 15, 19, each term increases by 4, so the next is 23. If a separate code is 3x + 2, the code for 7 is 23; this is a stated mapping rather than evidence about the sequence.
Do not select a rule because it matches one transition. Verify all supplied terms and check alternating subsequences.
Treat east and west as opposite horizontal movements and north and south as opposite vertical movements. Draw a small coordinate sketch for multi-step routes. For a ranking problem, distinguish position from the front from the number of people ahead or behind.
Position from right = total − position from left + 1
In a row of 30 people, the person who is 8th from the left is 30 − 8 + 1 = 23rd from the right. Walking 10 m east, 6 m north and 10 m west leaves a displacement of 6 m north.
Subtracting positions without the final +1 counts the gap rather than the inclusive position. Do not confuse distance walked with displacement.
Translate a verbal condition into a short relation before combining it with other conditions. “All” describes an entire set, while “some” establishes at least one member. A possible arrangement is not necessarily the only arrangement. Test conclusions against every configuration allowed by the conditions.
All squares are rectangles. This does not imply that all rectangles are squares: a rectangle with unequal adjacent sides is a counterexample. In an arrangement, a statement that A is left of B does not by itself mean they are adjacent.
Do not reverse an implication or silently replace “left of” with “immediately left of”.
